Ink stains.

A pen that leaked in the pocket. Ballpoint ink needs rubbing alcohol and blotting.

  • First: rubbing alcohol
  • Wash: as the care label says

What to do right away.

  1. 1Put kitchen paper under the stain, so it doesn’t go through to the other side.
  2. 2Dab with cotton wool dipped in rubbing alcohol. Change the cotton wool while colour keeps coming off.
  3. 3Rinse with cold water.

Try it first on a spot that doesn’t show. Permanent marker often won’t come out at home.

What not to do.

  • Don’t rub.

    Ink spreads quickly.

  • No alcohol on silk or delicate fabrics.

Those go to the dry cleaner.

  • No tumble dryer until it’s gone.

Heat sets the stain for good.

In the machine, with the sheet.

  1. 1Put one sheet in the drum with the clothes. For a bigger or dirtier load, see how many sheets.
  2. 2Wash at the temperature on the care label.
  3. 3Before drying, check the spot. If the stain still shows, repeat the steps and wash it again.

Always follow the garment’s care label. Silk, wool and “dry clean only” clothes go to the dry cleaner.

How many sheets to use
