Oil stains.

Oil from the pan, the salad or the pizza. First you draw the oil out, then you wash.

  • First: kitchen paper
  • Wash: as hot as the care label allows

What to do right away.

  1. 1Press gently with kitchen paper to draw out as much oil as you can.
  2. 2Sprinkle with flour or cornflour, leave it 15 minutes to draw out the oil, then shake it off.
  3. 3Add a drop of washing-up liquid and work it in gently with your fingers.

Try it first on a spot that doesn’t show.

What not to do.

  • No plain water at first.

Oil doesn’t come out with water; it spreads.

  • No dryer or iron until it’s gone.

Heat sets the stain for good.

  • Don’t leave it for later.

An oil stain gets harder to remove as it ages.

In the machine, with the sheet.

  1. 1Put one sheet in the drum with the clothes. For a bigger or dirtier load, see how many sheets.
  2. 2Wash at the hottest temperature the care label allows.
  3. 3Before drying, check the spot. If the stain still shows, repeat the steps and wash it again.

Always follow the garment’s care label. Silk, wool and “dry clean only” clothes go to the dry cleaner.
