Tomato sauce stains.

Pasta, pizza, ketchup. The sauce has colour and oil: cold water first, then a little washing-up liquid.

  • First: cold water
  • Wash: as the care label says

What to do right away.

  1. 1Lift the sauce off with a spoon, without pressing it into the fabric.
  2. 2Rinse with cold water from the back.
  3. 3Add a drop of washing-up liquid for the oil and work it in gently.

Try it first on a spot that doesn’t show.

What not to do.

  • No hot water at first.

The tomato’s red stays in the fabric more easily.

  • Don’t rub.

    The sauce spreads.

  • No tumble dryer until it’s gone.

Heat sets the stain for good.

In the machine, with the sheet.

  1. 1Put one sheet in the drum with the clothes. For a bigger or dirtier load, see how many sheets.
  2. 2Wash at the temperature on the care label.
  3. 3Before drying, check the spot. If the stain still shows, repeat the steps and wash it again.
  4. 4On whites, hang the garment in the sun: it helps fade whatever is left of the red.

Always follow the garment’s care label. Silk, wool and “dry clean only” clothes go to the dry cleaner.
